ALOR GAJAH: SK Sungai Jerneh in Brisu, here, recorded the lowest number of pupils in the state with only 16 children — one each in Year One and Year Five, two in Year Four, three each in Year Three and Year Six and six in Year Two.

Headmaster Mustafa Kamal Mohd Nor said there were 10 boys and six girls. The Year One and Year Five pupils are both girls.

Nur Zahirah Aisyah, 7, of Kampung Sungai Jerneh is the sole pupil in Year One.

“We also combined Year Two and Three into one class, as well as Year Four and Five.

“Only Year One and Year Six are retained because each requires special requirements for those entering school and facing the UPSR,” he said.

“Overall, SK Sungai Jerneh has 16 pupils and this records the lowest number of pupils in the SK category in the state this year,” he said today.

He said this was the first year that the school had recorded a single pupil for Year One.

“According to pre-registration records, there should have been four pupils for Year One, but only Nur Zahirah turned up for enrolment, while the other three enrolled in another school.

“Despite having only one pupil, Nur Zahirah attended her class normally and she can have direct interaction with the teachers for all subjects,” he said.

Nur Zahirah said she was happy that she could be tutored personally by her teachers.

“I am having fun because it is only me and the teachers.

“It makes learning faster because no one will make fun of me when I don’t understand something and keep asking the teacher,” she said, adding that she wanted to become a doctor.

Last year, the school recorded a total of 31pupils (Year One to Year Six), and 29 pupils in 2018.
