MELAKA: "Although I am Indian, I am not ashamed of donning the tanjak (Malay traditional headgear) because I consider it a traditional legacy that all Malaysians should be proud of," said businessman R Thevendran.

The 43-year-old Bukit China-born said the tanjak symbolises Malaysian identity which should be nurtured by all to strengthen racial unity.

"Since I was a child, I have had many friends including the Chinese friends, who did not think twice about wearing the Jalur Gemilang-themed tanjak, which was a symbol of the Malays back in the olden days.

"The spirit of harmony that has been forged for so long must be strengthened through such activities, which serve to highlight the history, culture and togetherness of our society," he said when met by the NSTP here today.
