Alor Gajah: A family of eight had to spend the night inside a three-tonne lorry yesterday when their house in Kampung Belimbing Dalam, here, was flooded in about 60cm of flood water.

Zakaria Naim, 60, said he and his wife, three grandchildren and three children had no choice because the tent provided at the temporary relief centre could only accommodate four victims per family.

“Although uncomfortable, we decided to spend the night in the lorry owned by my son-in-law’s employer.

“We hope to be able to return home soon,” he said, here today.

A total of 343 families were affected by flooding in the area since yesterday.

Zakaria said he was grateful to the lorry owner for allowing them to seek shelter, pray and store their belongings.

“I hope the state government will be able to address the flood situation, which has been a recurring problem since the 1970s.

“If possible, we want to quickly move away from this railway land and buy an affordable home under the public housing scheme,” he added.
