MELAKA: A total of 745 people from 150 families have had to be evacuated in the state due to flash floods, and the number is expected to increase even though there are only light showers.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat head Effendy Ali said this was because there were thunderstorms in Negri Sembilan on Saturday.

“The rainwater from Negri Sembilan will flow downstream into Alor Gajah district and may cause more flooding there and possibly in Melaka Tengah as well. Currently, Alor Gajah has been worst hit with 10 evacuation centres having been opened.

“These centres are currently housing 677 people, while the other 68 were moved to an evacuation centre in Melaka Tengah,” he said.

Effendy was speaking to reporters after visiting one of the evacuation centres, in SK Krubong, in Melaka Tengah.

“There is every possibility that we may have more victims in Melaka Tengah. We hope not, though,” he said.

Effendy said among the evacuation centres in Alor Gajah were the Al-Rasyidin mosque where 166 victims were being put up, SMK Seri Pengkalan (118 victims), Panchor multipurpose hall (117) and Gadek multipurpse hall (66).

“In Melaka Tengah, one residential area and three villages have been affected by flash floods. These are Taman Taman Krubong Jaya, Kampung Lanjut Manis, Kampung Tanah Merah and Kampung Tampoi,” he said.
