KUALA LUMPUR: Gua Musang federal lawmaker Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has proposed that asset declaration should also include high-ranking officers in the government, police force and businessmen.

"Why only certain group is subjected to asset declaration. There were many foreign reports which reported that funds were transferred overseas.

"We must investigate and see what can be done," he told reporters when met at Parliament today.

He said MPs who had retired also should declare their assets.

Tengku Razaleigh, one of the longest serving Member of Parliament (MP), said he believes that some MPs were against the move to declare assets as it was not implemented in a proper way.

"It should not be the way, using standing order via motion to make it compulsory for all MPs to declare their assets.

"If we want all MPs to declare their assets, a law should be introduced for the purpose," he said.

Tengku Razaleigh said he has no problem to declare his assets.

"I always declare my assets, be it while in Cabinet or not.", said the former Finance Minister.

On Monday, the Dewan Rakyat approved the Code of Ethics for Administrative Members and MPs motion.

It was debated from noon until 6pm before Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof called for a voice vote to take place. The special motion was approved despite intense objection from the opposition aisle.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong, who tabled the motion for debate, said with the motion being passed, MPs would now be required to declare their assets as well as the assets of their spouses, children aged 21 and below, and those of their related trust holders.

They must declare their assets within a three-month period from the day the motion was approved (July 1), or have until Oct 1 to fill the declaration form to be submitted to the Dewan Rakyat speaker and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief.
