JASIN: Civil servants can get involved in politics but they cannot become leaders in political parties, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The prime minister said they should not be influenced by their membership in any political party when carrying out their duties.

"They must abide by directives and decisions made by the government," he said at a press conference after attending the launch of Melaka's Rumah Peduli in Lipat Kajang, here, today.

Also present were his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Melaka chief minister Adly Zahari, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof, state speaker Datuk Wira Omar Jaafar and state secretary Hasim Hasan.

Dr Mahathir said civil servants who have been supportive of the ruling coalition presently have been working hard to help the government implement policies and help the parties achieve victory.

"We will definitely not appoint them as chairman of government bodies but they deserve to be made board members of government bodies.

"If not, we find that those who never helped will get the perks, those who helped are prevented from getting the perks. That is not fair," he said.
