PENAMPANG: The Sabah government is planning to promote the east coast part of the state's tourist destinations to ensure a more balanced distribution of tourists.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the efforts, which are being undertaken by Sabah Tourism Board, would also open up business opportunities in the area.

"I appreciate efforts made by Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) in working with the ministry to focus on promoting the east coast of Sabah.

"This includes the launch of 30 Tawau Packages in July last year and 'Cuti-Cuti Tawau' during the Matta fair launch of in Kuala Lumpur last March.

"This year, 'Cuti-Cuti Sandakan' is also expected to be launched with many places ready to be explored,” she said after launching the 14th Matta fair in Sabah.

Present were Matta president Datuk Tan Kok Liang and Matta Sabah chairman Lawrence Chin.

The three-day fair, which has 115 exhibitors, is expected to garner sales worth of RM80 million.
