KOTA KINABALU: Works Ministry will focus on repairing roads and dilapidated schools in Sabah before moving on to the proposal of building an LRT train system in the state, said Deputy Minister Anuar Tahir.

“Although there's no discussion yet (on the construction of LRT)... which involves a huge sum of money. But, (I believe) it will take place after the necessary repair works have been carried out.

“In the context of needs in Sabah, the priority is to ensure road connectivity. I don't want any state to be left behind in terms of transport system.

“Besides there are already several delayed projects under the Ministry (that needed attention),” he said, after Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) meeting at the state party’s headquarters today.

In 2017, former Inanam assemblyman Dr Roland Chia had suggested that major cities in Sabah require LRT services to address traffic congestion.

In November last year, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal acknowledged that there was a dire need to improve the transport system but the LRT was not an immediate solution that can be done due to various constraints.

As for the Pan Borneo Highway project, Anuar said it was ongoing and one of the new administration’s priority.

Earlier, Anuar, who is also Amanah secretary-general, said the party now has a total of 117,944 members nationwide.

“As a new political party, we want to have a new direction that will ensure the country's continued prosperity and free from corruption, power abuse and wastages.” he added.
