GEORGE TOWN: Over 1,000 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) alumni is expected to join the Majlis Reunion Perdana Anak Kandung Suluh Budiman to be held here in November.

Suluh Budiman Alumni Association (SBAA) president Datuk Ahmad Burak said the event was held in conjunction with the 100th UPSI anniversary which will see former students from four eras from the institution.

“The 100th UPSI anniversary is in 2021 and the reunion will be held as a pre-celebration for the actual anniversary to be held in that year.

“Penang was chosen to host the reunion upon the invitation by Penang Governor Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas who proposed that the reunion should be held in a grand manner here.

“The reunion will be held at Kompleks Tabung Haji, Bayan Lepas, on Nov 22, 23 and 24 and we hope all the alumni will join to recall the nostalgic feeling of studying together at UPSI long time ago,” he said.

Ahmad and the leaders of SBAA spent time with the Penang Governor, who was also a former UPSI student, at his residence at Seri Mutiara here today.

UPSI was renamed in 1997 across four eras beginning from Sultan Idris Training College (SITC), Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI) and Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI), located at Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Amongst the notable figures studied at UPSI are the former Deputy Prime Minister, the late Tun Ghafar Baba, former Singapore Senior Minister Sidek Sanif and the late Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Dr Awang Had Salleh.

Ahmad said that apart from the reunion, SBAA also planned to organise Tun Ghafar Baba trophy golf for open category expected to be held in June in Kuala Lumpur.

The group also plans to organise Reunion Umrah with the former alumni of UPSI to Mekah and Madinah.

“For Reunion Umrah, we are targeting between 200 to 300 participants only and it will include Tun Abdul Rahman.

“We plan to organise it in September and interested parties can start planning as it is non-sponsored programme,” he added.
