PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he will only hold the prime minister's post on a temporary basis, despite calls for him to stay on until the next general election.

“I will not be the prime minister until the next general election. I think,” he said.

When asked if the issue on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim becoming the next prime minister was raised recently, Dr Mahathir said the matter was not discussed during a dinner with the PKR president recently,

“I had dinner with him (and) the matter was not raised.

"I think he is comfortable (that) he will succeed me.

“Maybe two years. I don’t know. It is short term,” he told reporters after the 2nd Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) general assembly, which ended today.

When asked if he would changed his mind if the people urged him to stay on, he said he would have to consider his health.

“I have to look after my health, I am old.” he said.

To a question, Dr Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairman, said the party is working on plans to uplift the Bumiputera and Malays communities under its new Bumiputera Agenda.

“We have a lot of plans as I stress before. (However) it depends on how the plans are received by the bumiputeras.

“There are certain practices or belief or value system standing in the way of them to achieve success.” he added.
