MELAKA: A 14-month-old baby drowned inside a bucket filled with water at his home on Jalan Pangkalan Lambak, Jasin near here yesterday (Dec 13).

The victim, Muhammad Arash Zahrain Osman, was found unconscious with his head submerged in water.

Jasin district police chief Deputy Superintendent Arshad Abu said the boy's parents were having lunch at the time of the incident.

"The victim's mother said she rushed to the toilet after hearing sounds of water splashing.

"She saw the boy's body inside the bucket head-first. After realising that his body was lifeless, she called for her husband's help," he said in a statement.

Arshad said the mother claimed that there was supposed to be no water in the bucket, which was earlier used to bathe the victim's older sibling.

He said the victim was rushed to the Sungai Rambai health clinic at 1.30pm for treatment but was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.

"So far, we did not find any external injuries on the victim, who was only wearing diapers. There were also no signs that a crime was committed," he said, adding that the investigation was ongoing.

The victim's body was sent to the Sultanah Fatimah Hospital in Muar for post-mortem and the case has been classified as sudden death.
