GEORGE TOWN: Continuous overnight showers triggered flash floods in several parts of the city centre here early today.

The heavy rain, which started since 3am, resulted in several areas to be inundated in about 0.6m of flood waters.

Among the affected areas were Jalan P. Ramlee, Lorong Kulit, Kampung Makam and the surroundings of the City Stadium.

Sungai Air Pinang, which was at the danger level, also overflowed on to the road, causing Jalan P. Ramlee to be closed to traffic.

Northeast district Civil Defence Force officer Captain C. Sehgar said the flash floods were believed to be caused by heavy rainfall during high tide.

“However, no evacuation centre has been opened and everything is under control.

“Severe roads were also impassable to traffic to avoid from any untoward incident,” he told the NSTP when contacted.

Sehgar said they had also mobilised two boats to help affected victims in the flood-prone areas.

The operations were called off about 11am and the Penang Island City Council is conducting clean-up exercise.
