KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohammad Ariff Md Yusof said he will need time to study the Election Court’s nullification of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) 14th General Election (GE14) parliamentary victory in Cameron Highlands.

He said that he would have to look into the issue thoroughly before commenting further.

“I need to read further (into the court’s decision) as I do not know yet about it being vacant,” he said when met at the National Heart Institute (IJN) here this afternoon.

Earlier this afternoon, Election Court judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi ruled that BN’s electoral victory in Cameron Highlands was invalid due to evidence of corrupt practices.

In GE14, the Election Commission (EC) declared BN candidate Datuk C. Sivarraajh as winner of the parliamentary seat.

However, the Election Court this afternoon allowed the petition by DAP GE14 candidate for the seat, M. Manogaran, to challenge the EC decision on grounds of existence of corruption.

On another matter, Ariff said he and his deputy Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon came to IJN today to visit Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the fireman who was injured in Tuesday’s temple riots.

He said that they, on behalf of Parliament, wished for Adib’s speedy recovery.

Both men arrived at IJN separately, with Ariff arriving at 3.55pm and his deputy Rashid five minutes later.

They spent around half an hour with Adib, 24, at IJN’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as well as his family.

On Tuesday, Adib and fellow rescuers from the Subang Jaya Emergency Response System (EMRS) unit were deployed to douse a car which had been torched by rioters.

But upon arrival at the temple, he was dragged out of his EMRS van and beaten by an angry mob.

Adib was later rescued by passersby who rushed him to the Subang Jaya Medical Center (SJMC) for treatment.

He was later transferred to the IJN for further treatment.
