MELAKA: The Melaka Historical City Council has urged all residents and business owners to display the Jalur Gemilang at all premises in conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka Day.

Mayor Datuk Azmi Hussain said the call was made as many premises in the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation heritage site had yet to fly the flag.

He said he was disappointed as there were also some business owners who were displaying flags which were in a horrible state of repair.

“It is true... there seems to be a lack of patriotism among the people here. But we will do our best to brighten up the atmosphere by putting up some 2,000 Jalur Gemilang around the city this coming week.

“The City Council will also issue a notice urging business owners to display the Jalur Gemilang, but perhaps we may also include an incentive for them when they renew their licences should they display the flag,” he said.

Azmi was speaking to reporters after launching the Sayangi Malaysiaku Fun Walk in conjunction with Merdeka Day in Taman Bandaraya Bukit Serindit.

The Jalur Gemilang campaign this year began on Aug 1 and will last tilld Sept 16, when the nation celebrates Malaysia Day.

Meanwhile, checks by the New Straits Times Press in several areas in the city proved Azmi’s words to be true.

The NSTP team visited, among others, Jalan Bendahara, Jalan Hang Tuah, Jalan Bunga Raya, Jalan Temenggung and Jalan Merdeka and found many premises did not display the Jalur Gemilang.
