MIRI: Works Ministry has proposed to construct a diversion route from Miri to the northern highlands, namely Bario and Ba’Kelalan, without passing through Brunei.

Its Minister Baru Bian said the project will be among his main agenda and the proposal was debated in the Parliament recently.

“This is one of my focuses and I hope to materialise it during my term as Works Minister,” he told a press conference after the Appreciation Ceremony for the Pfizer Malaysia Health members and volunteers held here today (Sunday).

“We need to cooperate with the Rural Development Ministry as rural roads are under the purview of that Ministry.

“We will communicate with the Minister to discuss on the best mechanism to develop the route,” he said.

“The road will be passing through small towns, such as Long Lama before heading to Terawan, Bario and Ba’Kelalan.

“We expect this can boost tourism along the route, all the way to the northern highlands.”
