SEREMBAN: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) aims to reduce accident rate at workplace this year to two per cent to achieve the 2.64 per 1,000 workers ratio.

Its director general Ir Omar Mat Piah said last year the accident rate at work was recorded at 2.93 for every 1,000 workers.

“For the fatal crash rate we target 4.56 for 100,000 workers compared to 4.90 for every 100,000 employees last year.

“Various efforts have been made to achieve this success such as surprise inspections, conducting seminars and taking action on premises owners who do not comply with safety standards,” he told reporters after opening OSH Seminar 2018 at Royale Chulan Hotel here today.

Also present were State director Izani Mohd Zain and Negri Sembilan Industrial Relations Council chairman Paul Valluan.

Omar said that 270,000 premises were inspected last year, 23,000 notices were issued and 324 employers were charged in court.

“Since the beginning of this year to June, 100,000 premises have been inspected, with 15,750 notices issued and 133 employers charged.

“Most of the cases were in the manufacturing sector and we expect employers to take this seriously by emphasising safety and comply with the rules,” he said.
