KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is ranked third, behind Singapore and the United States, in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2017, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Viu Keong said in the Asia Pacific region, Malaysia was ranked second behind Singapore, while Australia was positioned third.
“GCI, which was conducted by International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a body under the United Nations, measures the commitment of the countries in cybersecurity aspect.
“The index was based on five pillars, namely, legal, technical, organisational, capacity building, and cooperation,” he said in a written reply to a question by Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican (BN-UMNO Kepala Batas).
Liew said the excellent achievement was attributed to the government’s effort in establishing an effective governance in cybersecurity management in the country.
He said Malaysia’s active involvement in spearheading initiatives in the regional and international level also contributed to the success.
“Improvements in cybersecurity did not stop there and would be further enhanced.
“This is because the cybersecurity management environment is dynamic in nature with challenges to changes of cyber threats that come in various forms due to the evolution of the global information and communications technology,” he said.
