SEBERANG JAYA: The Penang chapter of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) is planning a recruitment programme for single mothers and school leavers to groom them for positions in the hotel industry.

Its vice chairman K. Raj Kumar said the proposal will be tabled at the upcoming state-level MAH meeting.

Raj, who is also general manager of The Light Hotel (M) Sdn Bhd, said a similar initiative has been in place at his hotel, where single mothers were recruited as housekeeping staff.

“This can create more job opportunities, especially for our locals.

“(The training will allow them to) learn new and exciting chores, such as cooking and others, to prepare them for the market.

“I am interested to bring this into rural areas too... to recruit and provide them skills to work.

“I hope this can materialise (after) I bring this to the MAH meeting,” he said after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house with orphans hosted by the hotel today as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

The event saw the participation of some 130 children, aged 7 to 18, from Rumah Permata Kasih, Bukit Mertajam and Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim DAYA, Sungai Petani.

The Light Hotel was in fact the venue for a double celebration, as it also threw an early birthday party for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.

The governor, who turns 80 next month, was present along with his consort, Toh Puan Majimor Shariff.

Abdul Rahman became the highlight of the orphans’ experience when he handed out ‘duit raya’ to each of them.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman; the hotel’s chairman Azhar Mohamad; and its executive director Datuk K.K. Sihabutheen Kirudu Mohammed.
