KUALA LUMPUR: A meeting will be held with Attorney-General Tommy Thomas soon to work out the formal structure to reopen investigation into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.
In saying this, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the Cabinet had endorsed the decision to reopen the investigation after Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad agreed to it.
Speaking at a press conference at the DAP headquarters today, Lim said this is being done in order to provide justice to Beng Hock's family.
Also present at the press conference was Teoh's younger sister Teoh Lee Lan.
"There's an obvious need to determine the cause of death, and the demand of the family for justice for Teoh Beng Hock," Lim said when asked on the reason to reopen investigation into the case.
Lim however stressed that the Attorney-General would have to be consulted first.
"I do not want to make any comments that would affect any subsequent investigation," Lim said, stating that more details would be given after a discussion with the Attorney-General.
"He (Attorney-General) is the one handling legal due process, let it be taken up from there," Lim added.
When asked when they will meet the Attorney-General, Lim said it would be soon.
Meanwhile, Lee Lan called for the government to push for institutional reforms to ensure that what happened to her brother would not happen again to other people in the future.
She also urged for an amendment to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act to limit interrogation time and to protect the rights of detainees.
Enforcement officers should also be given human rights training, Lee Lan said.
Beng Hock fell to his death at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in Shah Alam in 2009 after he was interrogated by officers overnight.
He was the aide to Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah.
