GEORGE TOWN: For the first time, Penang will be organising the 2018 Asia Pacific Masters Games (APMG), with some 2,000 contestants from 47 countries set to battle it out during the competition to be held in September.

The 9-day competition will take place from Sept 7 until Sept 15, attracting contestants aged 25 and above.

A total of 22 sports will be contested including archery, badminton, basketball, cycling, football, golf, hockey, softball, squash, swimming, tennis and weight lifting.

The half marathon and cycling events will be the prime focus for the event.

For the cycling event, three categories will be contested; 120 km, 80km and 40km, while the half marathon will see two categories; 21km and 10km.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Yew Tung Seang said this today after inspecting the City Stadium upgrading works which is expected to be completed next month.

The upgrading works began on March 1 last year and will be completed by Aug 30.

​“Once it is completed, the stadium can house about 20,000 spectators compared to 14,000 previously,” he told a press conference today.
