KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet will decide on Wednesday if the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches will be broadcast live over Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the proposal had been submitted to the government as one way to promote RTM and increase its viewership.

“We hope the decision will be favourable to us,” he told reporters after a visit to Wisma Bernama.

Gobind said the cost of airing the matches live would be made public once the Cabinet decides on the proposal.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Russia, will run from June 14 to July 15.

Earlier, Gobind said the proposal to repeal the Anti-Fake News Act would be tabled in the first meeting of parliament this June 25.

He said consultations with the Attorney General Chambers and other relevent stakeholders on the matter were ongoing.

“We have to look at a few factors before it can be repealed.

“This includes if anyone has been detained under the law or is being investigated under the law or what is happening with the on-going investigations,” he said.

Gobind said it would take at least two to three months for the act to be repealed.

Earlier, during his visit to Angkasapuri, Gobind proposed that RTM should be given a new look to keep it relevant and enable it to compete with other new media.

He said RTM had been given six months to improve on its content and programme delivery.
