KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's meeting with a group of European Union ambassadors has been described as an attempt to convince the latter that his opposition front was genuine.

Umno treasurer, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, in saying this, believed that the EU have other more important issues to look into such as matters concerning the refugees.

Salleh who is also the Communications and Multimedia Minister, said history is being repeated as a similar meeting took place when the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman was Prime Minister.

"In fact the EU Parliament even issued a statement criticising the jailing of (former Deputy Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and alleged that Malaysia's democracy is flawed.

"This is quite normal and the EU always comments about other countries while overlooking affairs in the EU.

"There are about 65 million refugees worldwide which require EU attention. Surely that is more important when thousands are dying every day," he said.

In a previous report, PPBM supreme council member Datuk A. Kadir Jasin was quoted as saying that the meeting, which was led by Dr Mahathir, took place at the residence of Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Malaysia, Maria Castillo Fernández.

It was also reported that 14 ambassadors and three charges de affaires of the EU countries were present to meet several Pakatan Harapan representatives, including coalition secretary-general Saifuddin Abdullah, DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai and PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jeyakumar.
