MIRI: More rogue immigration officers, believed to be working in cahoots with syndicates smuggling foreign workers from Bangladesh, will be arrested soon.

This was confirmed by Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali.

He however, did not give specific details on the arrest.

Mustafar stressed that the department will not compromise with any quarters who flouted the law even if the offender are their men.

“Kerana nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga (One bad apple spoils the whole bunch).

“I regret the irresponsible act by my men who are involved in this case but I assure you all that strict actions will be taken against them,” he told reporters during a gathering at the State Immigration Complex here today.

It was reported in Harian Metro that foreign labours from Bangladesh were brought into the country illegally through the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on a daily basis, which was masterminded by four big syndicates operating in Dhaka.

It was believed that the syndicates could earn RM5.2 million annually by charging between RM15,000 and RM20,000 per person, and bribing the authorities such as officers from the Immigration Department and Malaysian Embassy in Dhaka.

It was recently revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Home Minister, that four immigration officers were among seven people detained to assist investigations into the case.

The three other people arrested in connection with the case included a woman and her foreigner husband.

The arrest occurred in the wake of a transfer exercise involving 40 per cent of the total 1,500 staffs, which was carried out to restore the department’s image.
