KANGAR: A total of 72 Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel based in Perlis have been deployed to Penang to assist in flood rescue operations there.

APM spokesperson Mohd Rizuan Abd Gani said the remaining personnel will closely monitor the situation in Perlis following continuous rainfall in the state.

“For the time being, we have adequate manpower for the first two hours of rescue operations if Perlis is hit by floods.

“Should the situation worsen, the team deployed to Penang will be recalled back to Perlis.

“At present, the situation is still under control,” he said when contacted today.

As of yesterday evening, the number of flood victims in Penang have risen to 6,293.

A total of 1,602 families are seeking shelter at 41 flood relief centres in four districts.

It was reported that most parts of Penang were affected by the massive floods since Saturday, which have claimed seven lives.
