KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry tonight confirmed that it was the body of climber Ramli Abdul Majid, who was found by the Iranian Mountaineering Federation on Mount Damavand, Iran on Friday.

Ramli, 44, went missing after he was separated from other climbers when ascending the mountain’s summit on Nov 20, last year.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said the Malaysian embassy in Tehran would provide the necessary assistance to bring back Ramli’s body back to Malaysia.

It said the government wished to express gratitude to the Iranian authorities for their efforts in the search and rescue to find him.

“The government conveys its sincere condolences to his family,” Wisma Putra said.

Ramli, a systems chief engineer at the Proton Holdings headquarters in Shah Alam, and another climber from Alpine Tour Club, Syed Redzuan Syed Salim Shatri, 50, was separated from other climbers while scaling up Mount Damavand.

Syed Redzuan’s body was found at the Yakhar Glacier area later on Nov 28, and his remains were brought back to Malaysia.

At over 5,600m, Mount Damavand is the highest mountain in Iran.
