BAHAU: The younger generation must appreciate and continue preserving local heritage and traditions.

Tourism and Culture Deputy Minister Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said it is important for all to preserve local heritage, culture and tradition.

This is so that future generations can appreciate the rich history of Malaysia.

Ermieyati in addition said that tradition and culture are also tourist attractions and as such is also a revenue generator for the country.

"It is pertinent for us to preserve our local heritage, culture and traditions so that future generations can appreciate their rich history," said Ermieyati.

The ministry, through the Negri Sembilan chapter of the Department of National Arts & Culture (JKKN), today cemented the call with the launch of a cultural heritage programme called Seni@Nogoghi here.

Taglined under the Negri Sembilan dialect "Moh Jongok Leluhur Kito", the two-day programme was opened by Mas Ermieyati at Taman Bangkinang Homestay in Kampung Tapak, Batu Kikir, near, here.

Present was JKKN director-general Tan Sri Norliza Rofli, state JKKN director Mohd Radzi Omar, deputy chief secretary Datuk Rashidi Hasbullah and Juasseh state assembyman Datuk Mohd Razi Kail.

Ermieyati expressed hope that non-governmental organizations would take proactive moves to assist public agencies in shouldering the promotion of local culture and tradition locally and abroad.

Meanwhile, Mohd Radzi said the programme highlights the potential of Desa Stay, or homestay, as well as the rich heritage of Adat Perpatih in Negri Sembilan.

He called on Negri residents to venture to the historical points of interest within the state, and discover their own lineage and heritage.

Meanwhile, Norliza said the programme is a creative product to popularise local culture and tradition among younger generations.

Several booths were set up to showcase the various sectors involved in the state tourism programme.

The event also saw local celebrities such Abby Yus, Asmidar and Ally Nor entertaining guests and visitors at the event.
