KOTA BARU: A huge blaze gutted five double-storey shophouses at the junction of Jalan Padang Garong and Jalan Doktor, near the Kota Baru bus station here, this morning.
Two other premises were slightly damaged in the pre-dawn fire, but there were no reports of injuries.
A Fire and Rescue department spokesman said they received a call at 1.02am, and several fire engines reached the scene less than 10 minutes later.
"When we got to the scene, the fire was blazing at two wooden premises, believed to have been built in the 1980s," said the spokesman.
The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, and the operation was completed at about 5.40am.
The spokesman added that 40 firemen, including volunteer officers, and five fire-engines from Kota Baru, Kota Darul Naim, Tunjong, Pengkalan Chepa and Pasir Tumboh stations were involved in the operation.
