KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-three officers from the Customs Department detained during an operation codenamed Ops Samba 2.0 are set to be charged across six Sessions Courts beginning tomorrow.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said the charges would take place from May 28 to June 6.

Ops Samba 2.0, which lasted two weeks at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, uncovered tax evasion amounting to RM2 billion from smuggling contraband alcohol and tobacco.

The operation led to the arrests of 34 Customs Department officers of various ranks.

The date and location for the charges are as follows:

May 28: Selangor, four individuals

May 29: Selangor, four individuals

May 30: Selangor, three individuals and Kuala Lumpur, three individuals

June 2: Kelantan, two individuals

June 4: Kelantan, one individual and Terengganu, two individuals

June 5: Pahang, one individual

June 6: Negri Sembilan, three individuals.

Also detained in the operation between March 11 and 25 were 27 individuals and owners of companies.

Launched on March 11, the operation was a collaborative effort led by MACC's Anti-Money Laundering Divison (AML), the Inland Revenue Board and Bank Negara.
