KUCHING: Quick action by members of the public thwarted an attempted robbery of a woman in Taman Desa Wira, Batu Kawa, here, with one of the suspects arrested.

The incident occurred at around 7.54am when the victim, who is in her late 50s, was walking alone before being approached by two men riding a motorcycle attempting to snatch her handbag.

Padawan acting police chief Deputy Superintendent Lim Jaw Shyong said that as the victim struggled to defend her bag from being taken by the suspect, a civilian-operated vehicle suddenly stopped in front of the motorcycle carrying the two robbers.

"We managed to arrest one of the suspects, along with the motorcycle, while the other one fled," he said in a statement yesterday.

Jaw Shyong said the suspect, in his twenties, was handed over to the police for further action.

"The victim suffered minor injuries and scratches during the scuffle. The apprehended suspect will be brought in for remand orders tomorrow, while efforts to track down another suspect are actively ongoing.

"We express our gratitude for the involvement of the public and welcome any information that can assist the police," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code.
