KOTA KINABALU: Artificial intelligence elements will be integrated into the wildlife crime sentencing calculator in 2027.

Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli said efforts have begun in the development of AI elements in the matter.

He said the data collection phase would be done, and it is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

"We are currently in the second phase of development before the addition of artificial intelligence elements.

"The next phase involves the collection of data, in which the punishments based on the use of the system will be compiled and combined." Rahman said during the launch of the Wildlife Crime Punishment Calculator at the Kota Kinabalu Court Complex here today.

He urged for all quarters to play their part in the fight against wildlife-related crime, and stressed the importance of being updated with the best practices in its legislation.

"However, the system will require continuous monitoring and improvement to ensure safety, comfort, and reliability for all stakeholders."

Rahman also expressed hope for continued cooperation to ensure that the goal of delivering justice to wildlife can be achieved.

"We all play an important role in the fight against wildlife crime, and we will stay updated with relevant legislation around the world," he said.

The Wildlife Crime Punishment Guidelines in Sabah was initially launched on June 22, 2019, by the former Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri David Wong Dak Wah.
