KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today seized mobile phones belonging to three social media personalities over a probe into the dissemination of false content on social media.

Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard, blogger Salim Iskandar, and Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo, also had their statements recorded at separate locations.

Badrul Hisham and Salim had their statements taken at the MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya while Muhammad Azri was questioned at the Setapak police station.

The commission, in a statement, said the investigation was being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The offence, if convicted, carried a maximum fine of RM50,000, a year's jail, or both.

"The dissemination of false content which could cause annoyance to another person is a breach of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"Once completed, the investigation paper will be handed over to the Attorney General's Chambers for further action.

"Investigators have seized mobile phones belonging to the three individuals which were used to upload the video in question to aid the investigation," said the commission.

The commission, however, did not specify the content of the offending video.
