KOTA BARU: Police have arrested four men for openly lighting fireworks in a public area near Lembah Sireh, here yesterday (April 10).

Kota Baru District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said the suspects, aged between 22 and 27, were taken into custody shortly after police received a report about the incident at around 3am.

The four, he said, have since been released after providing their statements to the authorities.

"Police were alerted to the situation involving two separate groups igniting firecrackers at different locations. One group was near a hypermarket, while the other was at a nearby bridge.

"They were seen igniting fireworks in the direction of each other, with videos of the incident subsequently going viral on social media," Rosdi said in statement.

Rosdi said no damage to nearby property was reported as a result of the incident.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 7(a) of the Explosives Act 1957 for unlawful possession of firecrackers and fireworks.
