GEORGE TOWN: Two men and a woman were detained in separate raids here and Kedah, on suspicion of being involved in the robbery of cash worth RM143,941 belonging to a dates distribution company.

The trio, aged between 27 and 52, were nabbed between last Sunday and Monday, in raids in Seberang Prai Tengah (SPT), Seberang Prai Selatan (SPS) and Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Following their arrests, police recovered RM71,019.

State deputy police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said, about 2.20pm on Feb 27, a worker of the company was robbed by an unknown man while on his way to deposit money in a bank in Simpang Ampat, in the SPS district.

"The incident happened at the parking lot beside the bank.

"The suspect suddenly approached the victim and snatched his bag containing the money before fleeing on a motorcycle," he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here today.

Immediately after receiving a report, Mohamed Usuf said police set up a taskforce in search of the suspect.

"Following that, police detained three people in separate locations in the SPS and SPT districts and Sungai Petani, Kedah. The 52-year-old suspect is an employee of the company.

"The other two are a married couple," he added.

Mohamed Usuf said two of those arrested had previous records for gambling and drug offences.

Police also recovered a Kia, a Yamaha LC motorcycle, a XDV motorcycle, three cell phones, three helmets, clothes used during the incident and a cash box.

All of them have been remanded for a week to assist in investigation.

The case is being probed under Section 392 of the Penal Code.
