ALOR STAR: A police lance corporal today claimed trial to 24 charges of corruption to the tune of RM9,400 at the Sessions Court here today.

Mohd Azlan Iswan, 35, claimed trial to all the charges read to him by two interpreters before Judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini.

According to the charges, Azlan, who served in the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Sik District Police Headquarters, received RM400 through 24 transactions at a bank in Sungai Petani between 2017 and 2018.

The funds were received from a supervisor of a company through the accused's savings account from Jan 3, 2017, to Dec 4, 2018.

He was charged with accepting the bribes while knowing that the company had dealings related to his official duties involving enforcement tasks under the Road Transport Act 1987 against lorries owned by the company.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutors Noor Azura Zulkiflee and Afiqa Liyana Rozman prosecuted.

The charge was framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment for up to two years, or a fine, or both, if convicted.

The prosecution proposed bail at RM10,000 with one surety and required the accused to report to the nearest MACC office monthly.

The defendant, who was unrepresented, requested for the lowest possible bail, citing financial responsibilities towards his parents and a sibling. He told the court that he earned a net income of about RM1,000 after deducting monthly commitments.

Priscilla Hemamalini set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and approved the additional conditions proposed.

The court fixed April 2 for document submission and legal representation arrangements. Azlan posted the bail.
