JOHOR BARU: A man who hid drugs beneath packs of sugar in his car boot in Durian Tunggal, Melaka, was arrested by Customs officers on Feb 14.

The enforcers found methamphetamine and drug precursors, which were worth about RM543,000, in the vehicle.

Johor Customs director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said the narcotics were put in brown paper packages that were kept in a red sack. Three packets of sugar were placed on top of the sack in the boot.

Aminul Izmeer said the man, in his 30s, told the officers the sack contained packets of sugar.

The man has been charged, he added.

In another case, Customs officers discovered more than two million kretek cigarettes worth RM1 million in a raid on a store in Shah Alam, Selangor, on Jan 9.

Aminul Izmeer said the unpaid tax on the kretek, believed to be smuggled from Indonesia, amounted to more than RM1.6 million.

He urged members of the public with information on smuggling activities to call the authorities at 1-800-88-8855.

He said their identities would be kept confidential.
