KOTA KINABALU: A woman working at a bank experienced a terrifying ordeal when she was assaulted and robbed by a foreign man near a hotel on Gaya Street.

In the incident which occured at about 6.30am on Feb 16, the 50-year-old victim reportedly suffered head injuries from being struck with a piece of wood.

Acting Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, Superintendent Kalsom Idris, said the incident occurred as the victim was walking to her workplace. However, she was suddenly approached from behind by a man who struck her with a piece of wood.

"The victim tried to defend herself, but the suspect struck her multiple times. The suspect then grabbed her handbag before fleeing," she said in a media statement today.



The video clip which has been circulating on WhatsApp shows the woman being assaulted before her purse was taken by a man.

Kalsom said the victim, who sustained injuries to her head and body, suffered losses of around RM5,000, including the loss of her smartphone and cash.

She said the incident was captured by closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the scene, and the 29-year-old foreign male suspect was successfully arrested at 2:30am on Feb 18.

"The suspect, who did not possess any valid identification documents, was detained in Kampung Pondo, Pulau Gaya.

The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and is being held for further investigation under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code," she said.
