TEMERLOH: A 31-year-old shop assistant and her grandmother were injured when they were attacked by another family member using a motorcycle helmet and a broom in Taman Rimba, Mentakab, yesterday.

The victims, who suffered bruises to their heads, shoulders and hands, received outpatient treatment at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital (Hoshas) here.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Hassan said the incident occured when the shop assistant went to her grandmother's house about 4.30pm yesterday.

He said the victim along with her 77-year-old grandmother and an Indonesian woman were cleaning the house when her uncle suddenly appeared and told her to leave.

"The victim's uncle hit her shoulder with a broom and she walked out of the house. Once in front of the house, her uncle hit her with a helmet on the head and body.

"When the victim's grandmother realised her niece was being hit, she tried to defence her with a broom but the suspect grabbed the object and hit her (the grandmother) on the face. The suspect continued hitting her before leaving the house on a motorcycle," he said in a statement today.

Mazlan said both the victims went to Hoshas for treatment before they lodged a police report.

He said investigations revealed the 31-year-victim lives in Kuala Lumpur and had returned to Mentakab for Chinese New Year holidays on Feb 1 while her grandmother lives with her other children in Mentakab.

"The house belongs to the elderly woman but she no longer stays there and the suspect now occupies the premises," he said.

Mazlan said police have detained a 52-year-old unemployed man to facilitate investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code for assault.
