TANAH MERAH: A Proton Persona suspected of carrying fuel was destroyed in a fire after it crashed along Jalan Tanah Merah-Jeli here earlier this morning.

The Kemahang fire station chief, Disagar Mani Mustafa, said they received a distress call at 11.36am and immediately rushed to the location, where they found a car in flames.

Apart from the six officers and personnel from the Kemahang fire station, he said another team from the Tanah Merah fire station was also at the scene.

"The fire was difficult to put out and took quite some time and effort because of the suspected fuel that was in the car. Firemen had to use foam to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading and burning further.

"The fire was put out by 12.40pm before the forensics team began to investigate the cause of the fire," he said when contacted here earlier today (Feb 16).

Disagar said no fatalities or injuries were reported, and it is understood that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the burning car.

"We found that petrol stored in barrels were not only in the car's cabin but also in the rear bonnet.

"Members of the public are strongly advised not to carry highly flammable substances in a vehicle to avoid such similar incidents from happening and to avert any loss of life.

"Regardless of whether it is a small or large amount or quantity, such actions are very dangerous and can lead to disaster," he said.
