TAPAH: Police today denied that 13 detainees of Rohingya ethnicity, who escaped from Bidor Temporary Immigration Depot here, were killed in a road accident.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that police came across a post on social media saying that 13 detainees were killed in the road accident at Km335 of the North-South Expressway.

"We deny the matter as it had gone viral thanks to an irresponsible party," he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia (MCMC) Act 1998, which provides a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonment up to a year, or both.

He added that police would like to advise the people to stop spreading fake or inaccurate information, as well as not to make any speculation about this case.

"Those who with information can channel them to the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent Noor Irwan Abd Ghani, at 017-3168097 or contact the Tapah district police headquarters at 05-4011222," he said.

Earlier, police confirmed that 131 Myanmar and Rohingya illegal immigrants escaped from the Bidor Temporary Immigration Depot.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Naim Asnawi said there was a riot incident inside the male block depot, and all the detainees managed to flee the facility.

"We received the first call about the incident yesterday, informing us that 131 detainees had escaped the Bidor Immigration Depot.

"One of the escapees also died after being involved in an accident at Km335 of the North-South Expressway (northbound)," Mohd Naim said.
