ALOR STAR: A heavily pregnant woman, who is due to deliver her first child in two weeks, landed in the lock-up after she and her husband were caught for trafficking 10kg of marijuana at the Malaysia-Thai border here on Sunday.
The couple who hailed from Perlis, was detained at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex about 11.50pm while travelling back from the neighbouring country.
Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Rodzi Abu Hassan said officers manning the border checkpoint flagged down the couple's Toyota Hilux upon noticing something amiss with the pick-up truck.
"Upon inspecting the vehicle, the police team found 10 packets of suspected marijuana, worth RM32,000 concealed in a hidden compartment in the foreign registered vehicle. The amount of drugs seized could cater the supply for some 3,200 addicts.
"The 34-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife had frequently crossing the border suspected of trafficking marijuana from a neighbouring country.
"We are currently investigating whether they are part of a larger drugs trafficking syndicate, as they do not own the foreign-registered Toyota Hilux," he said during a press conference at the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters here today.
Rodzi added that urine test on the couple also turned out positive for marijuana.
Checks revealed that the male suspect has eight drug-related records and two criminal records, while the wife has three drug-related records.
Rodzi added that the woman, who is nine-months pregnant, is expected to deliver her first child by January 21.
He said that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act for drugs trafficking.
The couple is being detained under remand order until January 14 for further investigation.
