KOTA BARU: The state Customs Department seized smuggled frozen chicken worth about RM100,000 including its unpaid duty and without 'halal' certification, in an operation yesterday.

Department director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said no one was arrested in the operation at Jalan Kuala Krai.

However, two lorries valued about RM80,000, were also seized in the operation.

"The state Customs team received information on the illegal activities two weeks ago.

"The team spotted the suspected lorries when the vehicles were left abandoned in front of a house in Jalan Kuala Krai about 8am.

"After inspecting the vehicles, they found boxes and plastic packages containing 13,350kg of frozen chickens," he told a Press conference here today.

Wan Jamal said the department believed that the frozen chicken were smuggled from the neighbouring country via the many illegal jetties along the border.

"The modus operandi of the smugglers is to bring in the frozen chicken via the illegal jetty using boats via Golok river.

"From the riverbank, the frozen chicken will be picked up by the lorry drivers who will later send them to buyers in Kelantan and in the Klang Valley.

"All the frozen chicken did not have any halal certificate and would normally be sold to petty traders," he added.
