SERDANG: A Pakistani man accused of robbery and rape has been detained in the vicinity of a condominium in Taman Serdang Perdana, Seri Kembangan, yesterday.

He was arrested after a closed-circuit television (CCTV) examination identified his escape route.

Serdang district police chief Assistant Commissioner A. A. Anbalagan said in the incident that occurred at 12.40am last Sunday, a 29-year-old woman was accessing the Serdang KTM via a pedestrian bridge when he was approached by an unknown man.

The victim, who works as a part-time promoter at a shopping centre in Putrajaya was on her way home from work when she was robbed of her mobile phone and then raped on the pedestrian bridge.

The suspect had also brandished a knife at the victim.

"The traumatised victim then came forward to make a police report, and as a result of the investigation at 8.30pm yesterday, police detained a 23-year-old Pakistani man involved in the incident.

"A 29-year-old man believed to be an accomplice in another robbery incident on Dec 30, causing a 20-year-old woman to lose two mobile phones and sustain an injury to her right finger, was also arrested," he said at a press conference at Serdang district police headquarters, today.

Anbalagan said both suspects were unemployed, and investigations revealed that the first suspect entered the country in August last year, while the second suspect had been in the country for six months.

"The victim had only been working at the shopping centre for a week before the incident.

"The suspect would also carry a pin needle and ask the victim to open the mobile phone using it to remove the SIM card before being directed to reset the mobile phone," he said.

He added that the suspects admitted to their involvement in both incidents, and the cases are being investigated under Section 392/397 and Section 376 of the Penal Code, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

"The suspects have been remanded for seven days starting yesterday until Jan 22 to assist in the investigation, where CCTV also played a role in tracking the suspects, leading to their successful capture.

"The Serdang IPD advises any members of the public who have been victims of robbery by these suspects to make police reports, and if they have information about suspicious individuals, they are encouraged to provide that information," he said.
