KUANTAN: A 38-year-old trader ended up losing RM70,822 within four-days without receiving any returns after being tricked into investing her savings in an online Bitcoin scheme.

The incident unfolded on Jan 10 when the woman from Cameron Highlands received an invitation to participate in a Bitcoin investment scheme through WhatsApp.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim was enticed by the Bitcoin scheme which only required her to invest and do all the transactions online.

"The victim was attracted to the package offered by the scheme. She used her savings and made 25 transactions into seven separate bank accounts.

"The trader realised that she had been cheated by a non-existent investment scheme

when she did not receive any further updates about the scheme and the profit which she was promised. She lodged a police report yesterday," he said in a statement today.

Yahaya said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and reminded the public not to be easily duped to join online investment schemes which promise huge returns.

He advised the public to verify all the account numbers and phone information at http:/semakmule.rmp.gov.my before making any transactions.
