TELUK INTAN: A 60-year-old man and his wife were jointly charged at the Sessions Court here today for transporting 10 migrants smuggled into the country last month.

Kamarulzaman Abd Wahab and his 54-year-old wife Supiani only nooded their heads when the charges of their offence were read to them before Judge Intan Nurul Farena Zainal Abidin.

No plea was recorded as the offence falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge sheet, the couple were accused of transporting the 10 migrants using a Nissan Serena at Jalan Batu 12, Jalan Bagan Datoh near Hutan Melintang at 5.30am on Nov 29.

Both accused, who work as assistant at a restaurant assistants were charged under under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries the five years imprisonment or RM250,000 in fine , or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Nazreen Zabarudin prosecuted. Kamarulzaman and his wife were not represented.

The Court did not set any bail as the offence is a non-bailable offence. The Court, however, fixed Feb 27 as the case management before the case is being transferred to the High Court.
