KUALA PILAH: A prison inspector was brought before the Kuala Pilah Sessions Court today on criminal breach of trust charges amounting to RM9,850 belonging to inmates of the Jelebu Drug Rehabilitation Centre from March to May.

The accused, Hasry Hisyam Hassan, 33, however, pleaded not guilty and requested to be tried after the charges were read to him before Judge Norma Ismail.

According to the charge sheet, the accused, as a civil servant and prison inspector of the Jelebu Drug Rehabilitation Centre, was entrusted with control over certain property, namely cash belonging to the inmates in the Jelebu Drug Rehabilitation centre, and committed criminal breach of trust amounting to RM9,850.

The offence took place between Mar 30, 2023, and May 1, 2023, at the Jelebu Drug Rehabilitation Centre.

Following this, the accused committed an offence punishable under Section 409 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he could face imprisonment for a term not less than two years and not more than 20 years, whipping, and a fine.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Qaiyyum Ramlan proposed a bail of RM6,000.

However, lawyer Adi Zulkarnain Zulkafli, who represented the accused, requested a minimum bail amount as the accused has to support his wife and two children, who are still in school, in addition to having monthly commitments to pay for his car and house.

The court set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and scheduled Jan 10 for mention.
