ALOR GAJAH: The almost fully decomposed body of a person, believed to be a murder victim, was found in an oil palm smallholding in Pulau Sebang, here, on Saturday.

The discovery was made about 10am by a member of the public who was led there by the stench coming from the area.

Melaka police chief Datuk Zainol Samah said a police team which was despatched to the scene found the body of what is believed to be a man clad in jeans but without any identification documents.

Police, he said, initially classified the case as a sudden death report but changed this after a post-mortem examination revealed injury marks to the torso and head of the victim.

"The examination also found wounds made by a sharp object on the neck of the victim," he said.

Police are now checking to see if the victim could be a man who had been reported missing in Tampin, Negri Sembilan.

Zainol said family members of the missing person, however, were unable to identify the body as it had decomposed beyond recognition.

"As of now, we have been unable to ascertain the identity of the victim. We are waiting for the results of a DNA comparison test conducted on the next of kin of the missing person," he said.

He urged those with information on the case to contact the Alor Gajah police headquarters at 06-5562222 or the nearest police station.
