BENTONG: A foreigner has been detained for allegedly raping a woman at a hotel in Genting Highlands on Monday.

Bentong district police chief, Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar, said the 41-year-old suspect, who was at the location on holiday, has been remanded for a week until June 19.

He said the incident occurred on June 12 at 5.20am as the woman was walking back to a room belonging to her friend.

"While walking, she was approached by a man she didn't know. The man asked her about some of the hotel's facilities," he said in a statement.

The man then asked the woman to sleep with him, to which she refused.

"However, the man then grabbed her hand and pulled her into his room, where he then forcefully raped her," he said.

Zaiham said police, after being alerted to the incident, deployed a team from the Bentong district headquarters to the location.

The suspect was arrested near the hotel around 1pm the same day.

The case is being investigated for rape under Section 376 of the Penal Code.

If charged and found guilty, the suspect could be jailed no less than eight years and a maximum of 30 years. He also faces no less than 10 strokes of the rotan.
