KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today stressed that the decision to charge any individual is grounded on the evidence and facts that have emerged from the investigation.

Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun said the charges were not filed due to pressure from certain parties or other factors.

He said this in response to accusations of selective prosecution, political motivation, and persecution in recent cases involving former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Idrus further said the decision to prosecute was based solely on the evidence in the investigation paper, without favouring anyone.

He said the decision was based on the core of integrity to ensure that victims, witnesses, the accused, and the public receive appropriate justice, in line with the jurisdiction of the Attorney General provided under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution.

"The AGC denies allegations of selective prosecution, politically motivated charges, and persecution against any individual who violates any provision of the law.

"If there is a statement and strong evidence that any individual has committed an offence under any provision of the law, the individual involved will be prosecuted based on the provision of the law, regardless of their status and background," his statement read.

Muhyiddin had earlier today questioned how the AGC made the decision to charge him earlier when he had not given any statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The former prime minister claimed that he knew the government had already decided to prosecute him even though the investigation had not been completed.

"They are just using the law enforcement agency as a tool to achieve their political agenda. Clearly, the prosecution against me is a form of organised political predation.

"I have been involved in politics for 50 years and throughout that period, I have not done anything wrong," he claimed.

Earlier today, Muhyiddin was charged in the Sessions Court with six counts of corruption and power abuse involving RM427.5 million.

The Bersatu president pleaded not guilty after all the charges were read to him in front of Judge Azura Alwi.
