SIBU: The Sarawak Forestry Department has cracked down on illegal logging activities with the seizure of 717 logs of various types and sizes at Batu 36 here in Jalan Oya, Tamin, Selangau.

Its director Datuk Hamden Mohammad said the seizure was carried out by a team of enforcement officers from the Sibu Regional Forest Office, after detecting the activity while conducting patrols in the area, yesterday.

"The team of eight enforcement officers were dispatched to the said location.

"Upon arrival, they found seven piles of logs of various species and sizes believed to have been illegally felled because they did not have the department's hammer mark and log production identity tags on both ends of the logs," he said in a statement today.

He said the value of the seized logs have yet to be ascertained until further investigations are completed.

He added a police report had also been lodged at the Selangau Police Station on the confiscation of the logs to enable further action to be taken.

"An investigation paper will also be opened," he said.
