KUANTAN: Three days after confiscating sawn timber, the Malaysian Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) yesterday seized bamboo brooms at the Kuantan Port near here.

The agency said the 2,350 broom sticks worth RM65,946 were seized during a routine inspection on a container which arrived from China earlier in the morning.

"The goods did not secure the required import permit. The consignments have been seized for further inspection.

"Importers are urged to comply with all rules and regulations under the country's legal requirements. Maqis will continue to intensify border checks and will ensure imported consignments will not pose a threat to the country," it said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 11(1) of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act of Malaysia 2011 for bringing in goods without an import permit where those found guilty could be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed up to six years, or both.

On Sept 5, Maqis seized 32.266 cubic metres of walnut sawn timber worth some RM245,600 which failed to meet import permit requirements at Kuantan Port.
